Product Description

The Odd Time Drumming book, by David Lewitt, takes a practical and fun approach to learn odd times, covering 3/4, 5/4, 7/4, 5/8, 7/8, 9/8, 11/8, 13/8, 15/8, 17/16 and 19/16. Together, this group of time signatures cover much of what is used in fusion and progressive rock, and each time signature is explored with up to 36 different groove examples from easy to difficult. There is also a musical etude for each meter.

One of the most engaging aspects of the book are the real-world examples provided for each time signature on tracks from legendary artists such as Frank Zappa, Rush, Bill Bruford, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Led Zeppelin, Tool, Soundgarden, King Crimson, The Allman Brothers, Heart, Radiohead, and many more. Audio demos of many of the transcribed artist grooves are provided, as well as a video for each chapter/time signature demonstrating various examples from the book. As with all books in Hudson’s digital format, you simply tap on an icon or example and that audio or video will play back from right within the book.

“Dave Lewitt has created an excellent book on time signatures. Maybe now people will stop asking me how to play ‘Sound Chaser.’”

  • Alan White (Yes)

“A great book for the reference library”

  • Billy Cobham (Mahavishnu Orchestra)

“Dave has tackled the subject of odd time drumming, a potentially intimidating style to the uninitiated, and presented a clear path towards understanding and mastery. He references jazz, fusion, prog, and rock drumming. His examples and exercises are fun to play, and they groove!“

  • Richie Morales (Spyro Gryra)

The Odd Time Drumming Book is an invaluable resource for any drummer looking to expand their metric vocabulary and groove in many meters. The clear and progressive exercises coupled with examples from classic recordings will lead any drummer to success in “Odd Times”.  Kudos to Dave, I will be studying and teaching from it for years to come.
